SOCMI is an independent, non-profit, educational
organization funded by private individuals,
business community leaders and local granting agencies.
The Southern Ontario Chamber Music Institute (SOCMI) focuses
on the intensive in-depth study of chamber music in the
quest for complete musicianship. Our internationally-acclaimed
faculty provides student participants with expertise and
guidance through a unique mentoring experience. The 14-day
session takes place at SOCMI'S summer residence Appleby
College, a private school siutation on 52 acres of
beautiful lakeshore in Oakville, Ontario. The 14 day seesion
includes individual lessons, by at least two ensemble coachings
per day (three hours minimum daily), master classes, open
rehearsals, guest lectures, and performances by faculty,
guest artists, and students.
SOCMI accepts advanced string and piano students who
have the ability to work with standard chamber music repertoire. They
may be accepted as individuals pending suitable placement within a trio
or quartet or as pre-formed ensembles.
OUR MISSION “To
provide a unique, educational chamber music opportunity for young musicians
and to heighten public awareness and appreciation of chamber music.” We
accomplish this through our intensive mentorship program which, through
expertise,
guidance and inspiration, brings students together into a well-formed
chamber music
ensemble. SOCMI’S role is to develop young chamber musicians and
to make their music accessible.
Students and alumni are featured regularly at community events and are
given the
opportunity to be seen and experienced by the general public as often
as possible.
Many of SOCMI’s former students have successful careers as professional
musicians with several of our alumni performing and teaching across North
America and Europe.

…all play
a large part of the instruction process, as participants, faculty,
and audience members immerse themselves in the ultimate chamber music
experience. In addition to the standard repertoire, a musical piece
from our resident Canadian composer is studied. Two concerts will
be performed by our resident string quartets and trio, and a two concerts
will be performed by our students. Music will be provided to the students
in advance to ensure that the repertoire is rehearsal-ready upon their
arrival at the institute.
New this year, an Adult Study Program will
be incorporated into the already successful summer institute instruction
process, answering the need that adult amateur musicians have expressed
for a similar study program. For more information please click here.
